Dholavira — An Ancient Harappan City
Dholavira, on Khadir island in the Rann of Kutch, is one of the largest and best-preserved cities of the Indus Valley (Harappan) Civilization, dating back over 4,000 years. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it reveals a remarkably advanced urban plan, complete with an ingenious system of water reservoirs and stepwells built to survive the arid Rann.
Highlights include the citadel, middle and lower towns, a museum displaying artefacts from the excavation, and the famous stone signboard believed to be one of the earliest examples of an inscribed sign. It makes for a fascinating full-day excursion for history lovers.
